Maintenance of the Bafang mid-motor takes approx. 1 hour and is very simple. No special tools are required. All you need are 2 different Allen key bits (for removing the housing cover, controller and stator) and a flat-blade screwdriver. If the seals are damaged during maintenance, they should be replaced. We recommend that you keep 1 set of motor seals in reserve to be on the safe side. Below the blog we have linked the gaskets – separately for BBSHD and BBS01/02 (see “Matching articles”). To maintain the motor, you will also need conventional gear grease (do not use oil!), silicone and a special grease for the nylon gearwheel. We use the Mobilgrease 28which you can also find in our store.
As can be seen in the video above, maintenance essentially consists of 4 steps:
1) Preparation:
Unscrew the housing cover, dismantle the controller, remove the silicone and seals (caution: do not damage the cables) and then remove the stator; the housing can now also be cleaned in the area of the controller and the silicone residue thoroughly removed.
2) Lubricate the nylon gear:
Grease the nylon gearwheel with Mobilgrease 28(Caution: do not use conventional grease!) and refit the motor core. Before doing so, check the seal between the stator and housing again for damage and replace if necessary.
3) Insert seals:
Fit (new) phase seals, check rubber seal between controller and housing for damage and replace if necessary, reconnect 5 plug connections between stator and controller (firmly) and apply sufficient silicone in the area of the seals, then the controller can be refitted to the housing using the 3 screws. Make sure that the outer rubber seal is not displaced when tightening the screws. Attention should also be paid to the internal cables (do not use force).
4) Lubricate the gearbox:
Now grease both the large gearbox and the Pinion gear with conventional gear grease. Check the seal again for damage and replace if necessary. Finally, the axle is inserted into the housing and the gearbox cover is fitted. No great force should be used (if necessary, turn the Pinion gear slightly so that the gearing adapts to the large gearbox).
Basically, maintenance also works if the housing cover is only unscrewed after the controller has been fitted (after step 3) and the gearbox is greased. Maintenance of the Bafang BBS01 and BBS02 motor works in exactly the same way. The only difference is in the area of the housing cover. This is made of plastic and must be unscrewed before removing the controller.
When is engine maintenance necessary and how often should it be carried out?
We recommend servicing the motor once a year. If the motor sounds very rough, then at least the large gearbox should be greased. In normal operation, without any noticeable noises, annual maintenance and lubrication of the mid-engine is sufficient.
After the maintenance process, we recommend that you clean the motor with a damp cloth and check the cables for damage.
