Bafang chainring adapter, what for?

The chainring adapter (often also called a spider) offers the following advantages:

  • conventional, commercially available standard chainrings with the corresponding bolt circle can be fitted
  • 2 chainrings can also be attached to the left and right of the adapter

This means that not only the chainring sizes available for the respective motor, but also other chainrings can be used on the Bafang mid-motor. To ensure that this works, you should note the following:

On the one hand, the bolt circle (104 or 130 mm) and on the other hand the number of mounts (arms) of the spider must be taken into account. Example: With the following adapter “5-arm 130 BCD”, only chainrings with a bolt circle of 130 mm and 5 mounts can be fitted:

The bolt circle refers to the diameter of the chainring mounts. We have illustrated this clearly in the video below. The smaller the bolt circle, the smaller the chainrings that can be used.

As with any chainring, the chain line should also be taken into account here. The adapter of the Bafang BBS01 or BBS02 motor has no offset, whereas the adapter of the BBSHD motor has an offset of 7-8 mm inwards. To determine the chain line, we have created the appropriate templates for the respective motors.

You can find them HERE.

In addition, these adapters can also be pulleys can be fitted. This means that the Bafang BBS01/02 and BBSHD mid-drive motors can also be used with a belt drive.
