Converting a bike to an e-bike
How does the conversion of the bike work?
The basic principle of converting to an e-bike is very simple. All you need is your bike and a conversion kit. Essentially, the motor, battery and display are fitted to your bike. The picture below shows the before and after difference of the conversion:

Can any bike be retrofitted?
Due to the many advantages of the mid-motor (more efficient, simple conversion process, etc.) compared to hub motors, we only have mid-motors in our range. We also offer 2 different drive concepts: Bafang and CYC. This means that any bike can be converted. In any case, we are not aware of any bicycle, mountain bike, tandem, recumbent, trike, etc. that would not be suitable. In addition, the motors can also be used to electrify other devices, e.g. go-karts, water bikes, etc.
What is the difference between a standard e-bike and a converted e-bike?
The main difference lies in the freedom in terms of motor performance and the choice of components. With a retrofit kit, you have the choice between different motors, displays, batteries, chainrings, etc. Another advantage lies in the area of repairs: brand manufacturers of series e-bikes only allow repairs if these are carried out by an authorized service partner or specialist dealer. The same applies to the necessary spare parts. Of course, you will be asked to pay for labor and materials. If the bike has been converted, you can carry out the repair yourself, as this can be done without special tools or special know-how (many videos are available to help you).
In addition, the retrofitted e-bike uses the existing bike (sustainability)!

Can I even convert my bike to an e-bike?
Yes, but you must comply with the road traffic regulations (StVO) in your country if you want to use the bike on public roads and paths. These vary from country to country. You should therefore check your engine settings in this respect and change them if necessary.
The following applies to Germany:
250W nominal continuous power (not to be confused with maximum power – this is unfortunately not defined) and assistance up to a maximum speed of 25 km/h (+ start-up assistance up to 6 km/h using the throttle).
The following applies to Austria:
Support up to 25 km/h, max. power: 600W
These regulations apply wherever the StVO is applicable. These specifications can be set for all our engines. This video may be useful as a little help.
How much does a retrofit kit cost?
This depends primarily on the selected system and the desired service. The price range is essentially between EUR 1,600 and EUR 2,200 (incl. VAT). The price also depends on the selected components and the desired accessories. For comparison: “Cheap” e-bikes are also available for less than EUR 1,000 – however, the better quality series e-bikes start at several thousand euros. In comparison, the costs for a retrofit kit are very reasonable and at least as good in terms of quality – but above all they are more sustainable, as the existing bike is used for this purpose.

Can I convert the bike myself?
We recommend that you carry out the conversion yourself. With a little manual skill, this is no problem at all and can be done in half a day. You can also find lots of videos in our store and on our YouTube channel to help you. We show you step by step how easy it is to convert the bike. You can also send us an email or contact us by phone at any time – we will be happy to help you. Experience has shown that the work involved in converting your own bike is definitely worth it: this gives you a better technical understanding of the individual components and helps you find a solution much more quickly in the event of a problem.
However, if you don’t want to convert your bike yourself, we can also offer a solution: We have a partner company near us (AT, Tyrol) that will be happy to do this for you.
Okay, let's get started. What's the next step?
Quite simply:
- Measure bottom bracket width – you can find out how to do this HERE.
- Select a ready-made conversion kit or put it together yourself in the configurator
If you’re not sure, tell us your bottom bracket width and send us a few photos of your bike to welcome@fasterbikes.eu. We’ll be happy to help you!
