The battery provides the power supply for the bike’s electric drive. It is usually one of the most expensive components of the e-bike. In this blog, we explain the most important specifications of e-bike batteries. <\/p>\n
The battery consists of many individual cells that are connected together. Most rechargeable batteries are made from lithium-ion cells (Li-ion). These are very popular due to their high energy density and low self-discharge. The decisive factor is now which cell type (e.g. Samsung 35E, 30Q, 50E, Panasonic GA, Sony VTC etc.) is used and how these are connected to each other – in series or in parallel (see point 4 below). <\/p>\n
The nominal voltage of the e-bike battery is specified in volts (V). This value indicates how much voltage the battery can supply. A typical e-bike battery has a nominal voltage of 36V, 48V or 52V. A higher voltage usually enables a higher speed. <\/p>\n
The capacity of the battery is specified in ampere hours (Ah). This value indicates how much current the battery can store. An e-bike battery with a capacity of 10 Ah can deliver a continuous discharge of 10 amperes (A) for one hour. A battery with a higher capacity can store more energy and provide a longer runtime. <\/p>\n
This value indicates how much energy the battery can store. It is calculated by multiplying the nominal battery voltage (V) by the capacity (Ah). A battery with a capacity of 10 Ah and a nominal voltage of 36 V has a capacity of 360 Wh. This means that this battery can provide 360 W of energy for 1 hour. <\/p>\n
The letters S and P refer to the arrangement of the cells in the battery pack. The S stands for series arrangement and indicates how many cells are connected in series to achieve the nominal voltage. The P stands for parallel connection and indicates how many cells are connected in parallel to increase the capacity. For example, a battery with a series arrangement of 10S and a parallel connection of 5P has a nominal voltage of 36V (10 x 3.6V) and a capacity of 25 Ah (5x 5 Ah) if the capacity specification of the individual cell is 5 Ah (can be taken from the data sheet of the cell type). <\/p>\n
The discharge current indicates how much current the battery can deliver continuously without being damaged. An e-bike battery with a discharge current of 15 A, for example, can deliver 15 A continuously. A higher discharge current enables higher performance, but also a shorter runtime. <\/p>\n
An e-bike battery with a maximum charging current of 5 A can be charged at a charging speed of 5 amps. A higher charging current can lead to a faster charge, but also to a higher temperature rise in the battery and a shorter service life. <\/p>\n
The abbreviation BMS stands for “Battery Management System” and is a very important component of e-bike batteries. The BMS monitors and controls the various parameters of the battery – such as voltage, current flow, temperature and state of charge. It ensures that the battery is operated within the specified limits to maximize its performance, efficiency and durability and to prevent damage or overheating. Our BMS are also equipped with a Bluetooth module. This allows various values (state of charge, cell status, capacity, etc.) to be viewed via a smartphone app. <\/p>\n
Some of this data can be seen directly on the battery label or its description (e.g. S, P, Volt, possibly also Ah or Wh). The rest (charging and discharging current, Ah) can be found in the data sheet for the cell type used. It is important to note that e-bike batteries have a limited service life and can lose capacity over time. <\/p>\n
