One of the most common causes of poor braking performance is worn brake pads. Here you can find out everything you need to know about replacing and upgrading your disc brake pads.

How long will my brake pads last?

Different materials influence the durability of a brake pad. Then there is the riding style, the terrain, the weather conditions and the weight of the rider, which all influence how long the brake pads last. Unfortunately, there is no specific mileage recommendation.

When should the brake pads be replaced?

If you ride regularly, it is advisable to visually inspect your brakes regularly. Although brake pads can last a very long time, you don’t want to be unprepared far from home when the brake pads are dangerously worn. Brake pads wear out faster in winter, so it’s especially important to keep an eye on them at this time of year.

If your brakes are no longer working as well as they did at the beginning, this could be a sign that you need new brake pads. With mechanical disc brakes (cable-operated), you can tell that the brake pads are worn when the brake lever pulls closer to the handlebars. You can remedy this by adjusting the play in the system using the adjuster on the lever or brake calliper to regulate the cable tension. Hydraulic systems automatically adjust the pad release.

To check the condition of your brake pads, you can look into the brake calliper from above and, if necessary, use a flashlight. If you then operate the brake lever, you can estimate how thick the remaining lining is by looking at the distance between the brake disk and the spring. As pad wear varies from person to person, it is not possible to make a general recommendation as to how much pad should be left. In most cases, however, you are on the safe side if the pad is over 1 mm thick.

If the disc brake makes a metallic, scraping noise when braking, action must be taken immediately.

What types of brake pad are there?

Disc brake pads are generally available in three variants: sintered, organic and semi-metallic.

Sintered pads

Sintered pads (sintered metal pads) consist of hardened metallic components and offer a long service life and good performance in the wet. However, they need a little more time to break in, can sometimes be a little noisy, but cope well with high temperatures and are a good choice if you ride long descents such as mountain tours.

Organic coatings

Organic (or resin or non-metallic) rubbers consist of organic materials bonded with resin. The material is soft, so the break-in time is much shorter, which means they have a better initial bite and are quieter. However, they do not last as long as sintered pads, are not ideal in wet conditions and can glaze at high temperatures.

Semi-metallic coverings

The third option is semi-metallic coverings. These combine metal and organic materials with resins to hold everything together on a steel or aluminum backing plate. They strive to offer a performance that is somewhere between sintered and organic, depending on the amount of metal added by the manufacturers.

If you had to choose between these different pads, you would use sintered pads in winter and organic pads in summer. However, many cyclists like to use sintered pads all year round.

Further options

Rubber brake pads used in rim brakes are made of different rubber compounds with different properties. In general, they are quite robust and offer effective braking power. They are ideal for use with aluminum rims. Carbon rims, on the other hand, require special brake pads, which are often made of cork. This is because carbon rims are more sensitive to heat and have different surface properties. However, it should be noted that cork pads generally wear out more quickly than rubber pads, even though they generate less heat.

However, not all brake pads are the same, they come in a bewildering variety of shapes. You need to make sure you buy new brake pads that are compatible with your brakes.

Replacing the disc brake pads

Fitting new disc brake pads can be a little tricky the first time, but once you know how to do it, it’s a breeze. Sometimes you can replace the pads without removing the wheel, but it’s easier if you remove the wheel first. Use a mounting stand if you have one, otherwise carefully place the bike against the wall on some cardboard or carpet to protect the floor.

Most disc brakes have a locking pin screwed into the top of the brake pads, often with a locking ring at one end. First carefully remove the ring and the pin and set them safely aside. Now pull out the worn brake pads and dispose of them.

Next, and this is the trickiest part of the job, the pistons need to be pushed back into the caliper body. Most disc brakes, especially all hydraulic systems, are self-adjusting. This means that the pistons automatically push themselves out of the caliper body to maintain the correct pad gap as they wear. Mechanical systems, on the other hand, work in a similar way to rim brakes and the cable tension must be adjusted manually.

With the brake pads removed, take a suitably sized wrench or a flat screwdriver and very carefully push the pistons back into the brake calliper. It should not require much force.

Once the pistons are back in the caliper, you can insert the new brake pads, which is the reverse process of removing them. The new pads should slide in easily. Replace the locking pin and ring, put the wheel back in and operate the brake lever a few times. It may take a while for the disc brake pads to bed in. Riding up and down the road and braking hard is often enough to get them working well.

In summary, the replacement of disc brake pads is an important maintenance measure, to ensure the safety and performance of your bike. Choosing the right pad material depends on your individual requirements and the brakes you use. By carrying out regular inspections and replacing brake pads in good time, you can ensure that your brakes always work reliably and effectivelyso that every ride remains a safe and pleasant experience.

The brakes on your bike are hardly noticed most of the time until they stop working so well.
