E-Bike-Components

You want to have an e-bike, but your current bike suits you perfectly? Or your preferred bicycle is not an e-bike? No problem. With our e-bike conversion kits you can transform your beloved bike into a comfortable e-bike. In this blog, you can find out all about the e-bike components. What is essential and what are optional extras? How does the system actually work?

Required Components of the E-Bike System:

  • Motor and Controller
  • Chainring and Cranks

The motor of e-bikes with mid-drive motor is located at the bottom bracket, while the motors of e-bikes with hub motors are located in the wheel hub. The controller is the part of the mid-drive motor where the cables come out. It is the "brain" of the e-bike system and controls all processes. Many people believe that the display is doing this task. However, this is wrong, because the display is only a device for showing the parameters and is needed to switch on the system and select the support levels.

The controller cables are connected with:

  • Main Wiring Harness: This cable leads from the motor to the front of the handlebars. The display and optional parts (throttle, shift and/or brake sensors) are connected at this point. The main wiring harness is already included when selecting the motor.

  • Speed Sensor: This sensor is usually mounted on the chainstay (bicycle frame) with the magnet on the spokes. It detects the rotation of the tire, allowing the controller to calculate the current speed. This sensor is included when selecting the motor.

  • Battery: Most ebike systems work with 36V, 48V or 52V batteries (nominal voltage). There are various battery options: from bottle mount batteries (practical, detachable from the rail via key) to backpack batteries (also transportable in a bag) to custom-made batteries (customized - capacity, voltage system and dimensions freely selectable). Additionally, our batteries feature Bluetooth BMS, allowing the state of charge, cell status and more to be displayed via smartphone app.

Optional Components of the E-Bike System:

  • Throttle: When the throttle is engaged, motor assistance is provided without pedal movement. However, the legal requirements of the country must be observed.

  • Braake Sensors: Motor assistance is immediately stopped when the brake lever is engaged - no matter if the cranks are moving and/or the throttle is engaged.

  • Gear Sensor (Shift Sensor): Motor assistance is briefly interrupted during gear shifting (sensor detects cable movement). This enables shifting without pull on the chain and protects both the bicycle chain and cassette.


All these components are also mounted on the handlebar and thus connected to the main wiring harness. Of course, there are other optional components such as mudguards, motor protection plate, lighting, solar panels, etc. There are no limits ...

How does the E-Bike System work?

Once all components are installed on the bicycle and the battery is switched on, the system can be activated via the display. The desired level of assistance is selected. These are usually selectable from 0-3, 0-5 or 0-9, where level 0 means that motor assistance is turned off. The higher the selected assist level, the more motor power you will get (depending on motor settings, see the following part "programming"). In cadence systems (e.g. Bafang BBS01/02/HD Motors), motor assistance is activated by pedal movement. In E-Bike systems with torque control (conventional E-Bikes, CYC Motors), motor assistance is activated by pedal pressure. In both cases, motor assistance stops when the cranks were not moved (except: throttle engaging).

Programming of the E-Bike Motor:

The programming is done on the controller - either via smartphone app (Bluetooth) or using a programming cable and laptop. This allows values such as power, speed, motor behaviour, assistance per assist level and more to be changed. In many cases, these settings can also be stored twice (2 riding profiles) - for example road and off-road profiles.

By combining the right components and suitable programming on the controller, the E-Bike can be adapted perfectly to the riders needs. Whether for daily commuting, extensive tours in nature or simply for the joy of cycling - the E-Bike system offers a versatile and comfortable alternative to conventional bicycles.
